On the Importance of F-Droid

F-Droid is an app store for Android where only open source applications are available for free. It provides an alternative to the proprietary Google Play Store, which is where most Android app distribution currently takes place. Because the Google Play Store is where most users go to find and install apps, this gives Google the power to exercise control over Android app developers. In this blog post, I describe the design, mechanism and results of this control from the perspective of a long-time Android app developer.

    Another reason to check out eOS. F-Droid is a standard source for the default app store, along with the usual play store apps. I just got a Fairphone 5 last week, an installed eOS. I’m loving it so far.

    Big fan, but if you haven’t tried Obtainium as a client, give it a go. Can manage installs from F-Droid, GitHub releases, and more.

    F-Droid is the single biggest reason that Android is actually usable. And the only real reason Google aren’t getting sued for monopoly practices. If only ReplicantOS was more viable
